Please contact me about teaching opportunities! I teach a range of six-hour workshops described below and am very pleased to work with your group to customize the content to meet your needs. I offer in-person and online versions of all my classes. I have taught at QuiltCon multiple times, and at several chapters of the MGQ including Austin and Portland.

My teaching style is relaxed and very hands-on.

Workshops

  • Big Top

In this six-hour workshop, participants learn all the skills needed to complete this complicated wedge-based pattern that uses foundation paper piecing, templates, curved piecing and giant blocks! I will walk the participants through the pattern and explain some of the unusual techniques that result in this truly unique quilt. We will talk about how to use color to quiet or enliven the design with a demonstration of different color schemes and quilts that use solids and prints. Participants will complete one wedge in the class, giving them all the skills they need to complete the pattern.

  • Playing with Shapes

In this six-hour class, students will create improv quilt tops using basic shapes including half-square triangles, half-rectangle triangles, flying geese, and drunkards path. Students will arrange these shapes to tell a visual story. We’ll discuss working with scale, color, and negative space to create a harmonious design, and look at examples of designs that feature arranged shapes for inspiration. Students will sew shape blocks, spend time playing on the design wall, and start piecing their quilt tops. Each student will finish class with a unique design and all the blocks needed to complete their project at home. Students should know how to piece basic shapes as the focus will be on designing and piecing the quilt top.

  • Mitered Corner Log Cabin

The focus of this six-hour workshop is using color value and precision piecing to elevate a traditional log cabin style quilt . Students will learn how to use color value, hue and saturation to create visual interest. We will spend time discussing how to personalize the design with three basic layouts.  Students will learn tips and techniques to match points to create a clean diagonal line and to piece long strips without stretching or warping the fabric. And don’t worry, those mitered corners are just half-square triangles–no scary y-seams here! Students will complete at least a small quilt top in this hands-on basic skills workshop.

  • Broadcast Quilt

In this six-hour class, participants will learn how to make my most popular pattern. The Broadcast quilt includes quarter circles, half circles and orange peels giving students the opportunity to learn a full range of curved piecing. Participants will plan their color ways after a demonstration of using color value and saturation to make the design shine. Participants will then learn how to sew the three types of curved blocks that make up the pattern. Participants will complete at least one of each type of block and be on their way to a finished quilt top by the end of class.
