This next series of four quilts was inspired by Ellsworth Kelly‘s paintings. His use of vivid blocks of color seem perfect for a modern quilt design. I planned the designs using origami paper “sketches” and then made a rough grid to get some fabric measures. I cut the pieces freehand, trimming and shaping until I arrived at a pleasing balance of foreground and background. They are all quilted with a simple diamond, with lines spaced about an inch apart. I like the soft drape of this style of quilting, and the neat graphic pattern. The binding fabrics were chosen to complement the contrasting backing–I love to use a geometric print as the backing on my quilts.
